Blocked ears are miserable. Conversations become hard work, the television creeps louder, and one side of your head feels full. Microsuction clears it properly, usually in a single appointment, and most people notice the difference the moment it is done.
Why microsuction rather than syringing
Microsuction uses gentle suction under magnification, with no water flushed into the ear. That means the clinician can see what they are doing throughout, the canal stays dry, and the risk of irritation or infection is lower. It is also suitable for people who cannot have syringing, including those with a perforated eardrum history or grommets.
How to prepare
- Use olive oil drops two to three times a day for three to five days beforehand
- Do not use cotton buds or ear candles at any point
- Tell us about past ear surgery, perforations or dizziness
- Allow a little extra time if both ears are blocked
On the day
We examine both ears first, explain what we can see, and then begin. You will hear the suction, which sounds louder than it is, and you may feel a slight tickle or a brief cold sensation. Most appointments take around twenty minutes for both ears, and you can drive and work straight afterwards.
People often laugh when it is finished, because everyday sound suddenly seems too loud.
Afterwards
Keep the ears dry for a day or so and avoid poking anything into them. If wax builds up quickly for you, occasional olive oil once a week usually keeps things manageable, and we will advise on how often you are likely to need a repeat appointment.
