Private blood tests, explained without the jargon

Malpas Pharmacy team | 12 May 2026 | 5 min read

Phlebotomy is simply taking a blood sample. It is one of the most useful things in healthcare, because a small sample can answer questions that guesswork never will, from thyroid function to cholesterol, iron levels and vitamin deficiency.

Why people choose a private test

Usually it comes down to timing and peace of mind. Someone feels persistently tired, wants a baseline before starting a health plan, needs a follow up sooner than their next review, or simply wants an answer without a long wait. A test is not a substitute for GP care, and if something needs a doctor we will tell you clearly and help you get there.

What happens at the appointment

  • A short chat about your symptoms and which tests make sense
  • A tourniquet on the upper arm and a quick sample from a vein
  • A plaster, a two minute sit down, and you are finished
  • Your results explained in plain language once they return

The sample itself takes under a minute. Most people describe it as a brief scratch. If you are nervous about needles, say so at the start. We slow down, talk you through it, and nobody minds you looking the other way.

Making it easier

Drink plenty of water beforehand, as hydrated veins are far easier to find. Wear something with sleeves that roll up. Check whether your test needs fasting, and if it does, book a morning appointment so you are not going without food all day.

A blood test rarely changes everything, but it very often replaces months of wondering.

Understanding your results

Numbers on their own are not much help. We go through what each result means for you, what is within range, what is worth monitoring, and what needs acting on. Where a result should go to your GP, we will make sure that happens.
