About the service

What this appointment involves

Emergency contraception works best the sooner it is taken, so we aim to see people quickly and without fuss. The conversation takes place in a closed consultation room, not at the counter, and is treated in the strictest confidence.

The pharmacist will ask when unprotected sex took place, about your usual contraception, your medical history and any medicines you take, as some can affect how emergency contraception works. Based on that they will advise which option is most suitable, or if a coil fitted at a sexual health service would be more effective for you.

Before you leave, the pharmacist will explain what to expect afterwards, when to take a pregnancy test if your period is late, and how to access ongoing contraception. We can also talk through sexually transmitted infection testing if that is relevant.
