About the service

What this appointment involves

Flu is not simply a heavy cold. For older adults, pregnant women, young children and anyone with a long term condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, it can lead to serious complications and hospital admission. The vaccine is reformulated every year to match the strains expected to circulate.

At Malpas Pharmacy the appointment is short and straightforward. A trained pharmacist checks your eligibility and medical history, confirms there is no reason to delay, then gives the vaccine into your upper arm. You will be asked to wait a short while afterwards as a routine precaution.

Protection develops over about two weeks, which is why we encourage patients to come early in the autumn rather than waiting for the first cold snap. If you are eligible for the NHS vaccine we will confirm that at the appointment, and we notify your GP practice so your record stays up to date.
